Four Strong Reasons Why Smoking Is A Risky Behavior

At the time of my senior high school, very often I was offered cigarettes by my smoking friends. They thought they would motivate me to do better by frequently asking me, "Why don't you smoke?"

I didn't know how much this had affected me until I felt that only a coward didn't smoke. Added to this were cigarette ads on TV or a billboard that had shaped my mind that smoking cigarettes could make me look cool.

However, knowing and studying tobacco as the main raw material of cigarettes helped me to realize that because tobacco contains a lot of toxic chemicals, smoking is a risky behavior. Actually there are tons of reasons we should give up smoking.

Many chain smokers say that smoking helps them to reduce stress, to make them alert, or something else. But actually tobacco use does more harm than good as I will explain below. Many researchers have suggested that smoking will seriously harm our body.

To make it brief I have selected four strong reasons why we should avoid smoking. Understanding these facts will convince us not to smoke. Please read through all of the reasons, which are not limited to, but are the select ones I have chosen on why it would be better to quit smoking. Let's look at it from several points of view.

Cigarettes badly harm you body.

First, from personal hygiene's point of view

The Australian government introduced legislation that would require tobacco companies to replace color, logos, and promotional text on cigarette packages with health warnings. In Indonesia the government has warned its people of the danger of smoking. They inserted written notifications for TV, ads, and cigarette wrappers, saying that smoking can cause cancer, high blood pressure, heart attack, impotence, effects on pregnancy and fetus.

Researchers found out that cigarettes contain at least 12 carcinogens or cancer causing agents. Among others are nitrosamines, urethane, polonium 210, cadmium, n-nitrosonornicotine, etc. These toxic chemicals have been proven or pointed out as the cause of lung cancer and other kinds of cancer.

As mentioned above, our lungs are literally destroyed by smoking cigarettes. A bad cough, lungs becoming swollen with air, and lung cancer are the conditions which cause the destruction. Lung cancer is a deadly condition and the number one killer in the U.S.A.

It's just to name a few dangerous elements in tobacco. Let alone other chemicals like acetone, ammonia, arsenic, benzene, butane, cyanide, carbon monoxide, ethanol, methanol, methane, dieldrin, nicotine, and so on. You know that arsenic and cyanide are poison. Benzene is used for making dyes and plastics. Butane is lighter fluid. We use ammonia as floor and toilet cleaner. Your car exhaust fumes produce carbon monoxide. Dieldrin is insecticides.

What about nicotine? The nicotine in cigarettes is none other than insecticide, stimulant, and addictive drug! It causes a great addiction to smokers. That's why it's harder for people to quit the bad habit, once they start smoking.

You see, smoking can seriously harm your body in ways of cancer, heart attack, diseased lungs, etc. Also, it leads to your early demise. Not to scare off, smoking can cause a slow and painful death. A few people alone really realize that smoking kills more than illegal drugs, alcohol, suicides, traffic accidents, even AIDS !

Secondly, from cleanliness' point of view

You might have heard that cleanliness is next to godliness. But smoking is dirty. The stink of tobacco can be sticky in anything for 24 hours or more. Your house, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, car, and clothes can stink. So smoking makes you yourself, your family members, others, and your environment stink.

The color of your teeth, fingers, and fingernails will change into dark yellow or even brown and black. Once tobacco changes your teeth's color, it will be very difficult to put it back into a white color. And your breath will smell tobacco odor.

If you can see the inward parts of your lungs, due to smoking its color is black. Why? Because the tar in the cigarettes covers up "alveoli". These are the tiny air sacs to absorb oxygen from the air. You have nearly 300 million alveoli in your lungs which are polluted by tobacco.

Thirdly, from good manners' point of view

How many times were you disturbed by someone smoking nearby you? In some countries people just smoke everywhere as they please regardless of others. They do it in public transportation like buses or a train, or in public places like a park, restaurants, shopping centers, movies, libraries.

They don't go to places where they normally can smoke without disturbing others who don't smoke. This behavior is not polite. As a matter of fact this bad behavior is terribly annoying.

The cigarette fumes make others hard to breath. The tobacco smells make others dizzy. The worst is, such a behavior causes others nearby as passive smokers (though it's against the will of others). And research suggested that passive smokers are more exposed to the hazards of smoking.

So because this results in terrible consequences, it's no wonder why smoking may cause tension among people, friends, and even family members. If anyone gets upset that you smoke nearby them it can end up in the damage of relationships. You see, smoking is a repulsive habit!

Fourth, from finances' point of view

Do you know how much smokers spend on cigarettes? Well, how many cigarettes do you smoke per day? And how much is the cost of one pack of cigarettes? By multiplying these figures you will see that tobacco use is a very costly habit, too.

In the U.S. the price of Marlboro Reds with tax ranges from about $5.00 to $10.00 per pack. If someone smokes one pack of cigarettes every day, it means he or she'd spend between $150.00 to $300.00 every month on cigarettes alone. You can find a much healthier use for this money. Why not donate it to church, or to cancer research, or simply to pay bills?

Besides, did you know that approximately half of the cigarettes price is tax? So for each pack of cigarettes that you buy, you're actually donating your hard-earned money to the government.

Last but not least. According to information, in America on average, $6.6 billion are spent on health care for tobacco use per year. It's a waste of money, isn't it?

Conclusion

Now you know that smoking kills. Tobacco use kills everything. It kills the smokers by destroying their physical and mental health. It kills the environment and others. It kills people's relationship. It kills finances by wasting money.

Finally, I hope this information will save at least a few people from starting the terrible habit of smoking. As for you, be proud that you are not smoking!
